Parking

Aside from the trailheads on either end of the trail, the Border Route Trail can be accessed via a number of spur trails off the Gunflint Trail (Cook Country Road 12). The following table gives the trail distances between trailheads for the various access points.

Since the Gunflint Trail (Country Road 12) is one of the major access roads to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, a large number of lodges and outfitters woo for your business. Services for Hikers

Since the Border Route Trail is a point-to-point trail, you will have to arrange a means to return to your vehicle after your hike. Aside from the options to leave a bike at the end and bike back to your car or switching car keys with another group hiking the same section in reverse, several outfitters and lodges along the Gunflint Trail offer a shuttle service. For longer hikes, some outfitters listed below also offer to hold food cachés and resupplies.

Voyageur Canoe Outfitters Voyageur Canoe Outfitters offer a shuttle service for hikers on the Border Route Trail. Please call ahead to arrange a shuttle, especially for longer shuttles, i.e. to the trailhead of the Kekekabic Trail near Ely/ Fernberg Road.
Heston's Resort Heston's offers a shuttle service for $1.25 per mile (one way) and holds food drops for hikers of the BRT. Please call ahead for arrangements.
Golden Eagle Lodge Golden Eagle Lodge offers parking in their parking lot for a fee of $3/day and a shuttle service is available upon request.
Clearwater Outfitters Clearwater Outfitters offer parking, shuttles and food cachés for hikers on the BRT. The Outfitter is located at the end of the Daniels Lake Spur Trail (Clearwater Road).
Gunflint Northwoods Outfitters Gunflint Northwoods Outfitters offer parking at their parking lot for a fee of $3 per day per vehicle and a shuttle service to trailheads along the Gunflint Trail (County Road 12) for fee of $10-$25, depending on the trailhead locations. The outfitters also hold food cachés upon request. Contact Sheryl Hindermann.

Emergency Medical Services

In the hopefully rare case that you or someone in your party needs medical attention, contact the hospital in Grand Marais, MN, near the south junction of the Gunflint Trail with Highway 61 (phone: (218) 387-1500). Remember to call ahead if you can and give a description of the injuries, as not all the staff is on duty all the time.
