Boundary Waters / HikingFinancial SupportFor trail work outside the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, we use and maintain our own power equipment chain saws and motorized brush cutters. We recently received a generous grant from Recreational Equipment, Inc., which we used to replace our almost two decades old, and rapidly disintegrating, brush cutters. They are now thoroughly enjoying their retirement in our tool shed. A big 'Thank You' to REI for their contribution. We also would like to thank Heston's Lodge and Resort for their continued support with free stays at their cabins and their hospitality. We also thank James Wellman for a generous donation in support of the Spring 2004 trail clearing trips.
PartnersThe Minnesota Rovers are cooperating with several local, state and federal organizations to maintain the Border Route Trail. The Minnesota Wilderness Trails Alliance (MWTA) is an organization formed by the Parks & Trails Council of Minnesota, the Kekekabic Trail Club, the Minnesota Canoe Association and the Minnesota Rovers Outing Club who jointly organize trail clearing trips every spring and fall to hiking trails in northern Minnesota. We also work closely with the US Forest Service and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources on trail projects. The Border Route Trail is also bound to become part of the North Country Trail, that will upon completion connect North Dakota with New York state.
ThanksThe trail would not exist if not for the enthusiasm and energy of a large number of people. Thanks to all the trail crews who have helped in the construction and continued maintenance of the Border Route Trail over the years. Special thanks go to Ed S., Chuck H. and John E. for their ongoing engagement since the trail's conception and Tom H. for his hard work for the trail throughout the last couple of years (thanks also for providing the trails conditions maps!). Our appreciation also goes out to Tom Kaffine and the Forest Service employees in Grand Marais, MN for the smooth cooperation during trail maintenance projects and the owners of lodges and resorts along the Gunflint Trail, who over the last 30 years offered our trail crews a place to stay and helped out in a multitude of ways to make this trail a reality: Heston's Lodge, Clearwater Lodge and Rockwood Lodge.
