Camp Sites

This section gives an overview of the available campsites along the Border Route Trail. Most of the campsites within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness were originally built by the Forest Service and intended for use by canoeists. In many cases, therefore, you will have to take spur trails to access the campsites, but on the upshot: The sites are almost always close to water, well maintained and very scenic. Bring your swim trunks/suit and enjoy a dip in the lake!

Loon Lake

Setting: Outside of BWCA, no permit required for overnight stays.
Tent spaces: 2

Crab Lake
Location: Wide spot on Crab Lake Trail
Setting: Outside of BWCA, no permit for overnight stays.

Topper Lake
Location: On northern shore of Topper Lake, a short spur trail from the Border Route Trail.
Setting: Wooded campsite on southern flank of ridge.
Tent spaces: 2-3

This campsite is situated just east of the South Lake / Topper Lake Portage, right on Topper Lake. The short (50 yards) spur trail leading down the southern slope of the ridge to the campsite is marked by a wooden post with a small tent-symbol. Beware of slippery rocks in wet conditions.

The ground in the entire campsite is gently sloping towards the lake, but there are at least two good spots to put up a tent that are comparatively flat. Campsite is spacious, with enough room (and trees) to put up a tarp. Click here for a picture of the view from the campsite. Just across the lake, high cliffs mark the southern border of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.

Sock Lake
Location: At end of long, overgrown spur trail at Sock Lake. About 1.5 miles east of Mayhew Lake Access Trail.
Setting: Secluded campsite on top of 4 foot high cliffs.
Tent spaces: 2

The marked spur trail to the campsite winds its way for about 0.75 miles to this wooded and secluded campsite: Sock Lake is not accessible via canoe due to a lack of a portage. This is the only campsite on this small lake, giving it a very intimate feeling.

The campsite lies on top of a 4 foot high shelf that drops sharply into the lake. Unfortunately, the big storm on the fourth of July 1999 left two huge pine trees across the campsite.

South Lake
Location: 0.25 miles north of BRT, east end of South Lake
Setting: Wooded site on small bay
Tent spaces: 5

Follow the South Lake Trail north about 0.25 miles, descending the ridge to South Lake. Note that you will drop 300 vertical feet from the ridge to the lake, which you will have to hike up again the next morning. The site, however, is worth the effort: Nestled in a fairly dense part of the woods, it provides ample opportunities to pitch tents. The view west from the shore on the ridges and cliffs on the Canadian site are spectacular, especially in foggy conditions.

Partridge Lake (west)
Location: 1 mile south of BRT, at Partridge lake
Setting: Low tree cover, close to cliffs
Tent spaces: 2

At the intersection of the BRT with the South Lake Trail, follow the South Lake Trail south for about 1 mile. The trail leads gradually to lower land and down to the west end of Partridge Lake. This campsite is exposed and small with space for two 2-person tents. It provides little tree-cover, i.e. no refuge from the occasional high wind.

Partridge Lake (east)
Location: 0.5 miles south of BRT on east end of Partridge Lake
Setting:
Tent spaces: 3

To reach this campsite, you will have to descend a long, poorly maintained trail to Partridge Lake. On the way to the campsite, you will have to cross a beaver dam. The campsite itself has a lot of "furniture", i.e. evidence of previous campers is abundant and obvious.

Rose Lake (west)

Location: On Rose Lake, directly off the trail

Clearwater Lake
Location: On Clearwater Lake
Setting: Across the lake from two large palisade cliffs.
Tent spaces: 5

Very spacious camp site, which can hold five closely pitched tents. The camp site is sheltered by trees all around, about 200 vertical feet lower than trail.

Gogebic Lake
Location: On Gogebic Lake, directly on trail.
Setting:
Tent spaces: 3

This campsite features a nice overlook above and west of camp — Swimming is OK east of the campsite.

Pine Lake
Location: 1 mile south of BRT on Pine-Pike lake portage
Setting: Tree covered, next to portage on Pine Lake
Tent spaces: 3

At the intersection of the BRT with the portage connecting Pine and Pike-Lakes (marked by a sign), head south towards Pine lake. The campsite lies to the east of the portage trail, about 200 ft. from Pine Lake.

Pine Ridge (backpacking only)
Location: Between Pine and East Pike Lake, just west of where trail drops down to East Pike
Setting:
Tent spaces: 2

This is one of the few campsites that is not shared with canoeists, i.e. there is no canoe or water access (For water, go down the hill on BRT to East Pike Lake). There is no marker, but look for blue marking tape.

Portage Brook
Location: Southeast of bridge, just off trail.
Setting:
Tent spaces: 1

This campsite lies outside the BWCA and therefore no permit is required for overnight stays. It features an old table and fire ring, but there is the possibility of a large number of bugs.

Swamp River
Location: Across Rengo Road from eastern trailhead, just past boat launch.
Setting:
Tent spaces: 2-3

Like the site at Otter Lake, this is a very public campsite. It lies outside the BWCA and does not require a permit.

Otter Lake
Location: On Rengo Road, 0.75 miles south of BRT on Otter Lake Cutoff
Setting: Open site, surrounded by trees and brush, swimming in Otter Lake down the road
Tent spaces: 3

This is a make-shift campsite right on Rengo Road with some slanting ground. It has no tree-cover but is surrounded by trees and brush on three sides (the fourth is open to the road). If you are planning to continue your hike on the Superior Hiking Trail down the North Shore of Lake Superior, or continue on the BRT after hiking the SHT, this would be an ideal spot to place a food caché (but remember to secure your food from rodents and bears).
